My headlights look a little foggy. Should I worry?

February 6, 2021

Oftentimes, when people look at their headlights they notice that the outside surface of the lights are cloudy and discolored. When they go to the dealer they learn how much it costs to replace these cloudy lenses… that’s when they come to J’s looking for a more practical solution.

The experts at J’s know that replacing modern headlight lenses can cost hundreds of dollars. Luckily there's something Hatfield car owners can do about cloudy headlamps.

First, let’s talk about why the headlamps are so cloudy. Back in the day, headlights were made of glass. They were heavy, could crack, and had practical limits as to their shape so auto makers started using plastic headlight lenses. PA road grime and UV light take a toll on the plastic surface. Over time the lenses get cloudy and discolored. Just look at the domestic or imported vehicles in any parking lot and you’ll see a lot of that.

Because a disproportionate amount of traffic accidents happen at night, smart drivers make sure they have maximum visibility. Cloudy headlight lenses impair the amount of light that gets out on the road, which in turn can really hurt the time you have to respond to hazards in the road. This is a big safety concern and in fact, headlight condition is a part of the annual safety inspection every vehicle must pass in order to be driven on the road.

Fortunately, J’s Auto Service can restore your lenses. Using a combination of special cleaners and polishes, the cloudy and discolored layer is removed. This critical service costs a fraction of replacing the headlight assembly.

How pricey it is will depend on the size of the lens and how badly it's clouded. The treatment plan can be used on brake lights, turn signals, and tail lights as well. If it’s been over a year since you replaced your headlamp bulbs, they may have started to dim. Dim or weak bulbs can become a safety issue if you don't have them inspected. You can speak with your experienced J’s Auto Service service advisor about options to replace or even upgrade your headlamp bulbs.
